Animal Husbandry and Farming with Sarah Ehlrich
Sarah works onsite at Sadeh Farm. She is passionate about alternative education and helping to deliver personalised education using child-centred learning. Her long-term goal is to work in the 'care farm' sector, providing education on farms, sharing the importance of sustainable methods and creating the connection between growing and food.
Sarah has worked with children and young people in a range of positions, including working at a Steiner-inspired school which had a farm, helping students to engage in gardening following a biodynamic approach. She taught wool craft, working with raw sheep's wool, teaching wool processing from washing to carding to felting. She also delivered Communicate, a Saturday social communication group for primary
age children with Autism for Mencap and Gateway, managing volunteers and planning Speech-Therapy informed sessions.
Animal Husbandry and Farming Workshops - Mondays 1:15 - 2:15pm and 2:15 - 3:15pm
Next term Sarah will teach the children about the chickens on the farm, including activities and information around their welfare, health checks, anatomy, evolution and safe handling. They will also get stuck into harvesting crops and planting their own fruit and vegetables. They will help to clean and clear polytunnels and prepare the beds by mulching with a layer of compost whilst learning about nitrogen. They will learn how to treat different weeds including bind weed, thistles and nettles, and enjoy having a bonfire. There will be an abundance of opportunities to work as a team to sow, cultivate and nurture their own food, enjoying many sensory experiences along the way, developing their motor skills as well as their knowledge, and of course, sampling some tasty home-grown treats!
